Steel Windows Cape Town
Steel windows give a room a particular quality of light. The frames are narrow enough that the glass does most of the work, which is why architects keep returning to steel on new builds and restorations alike. If you are weighing steel against aluminium or timber, the deciding question is usually how much frame you want to see.
As the exclusive distributor of Jansen steel fenestration systems, M2G Jansen supplies steel window profiles from our Cape Town showroom to accredited fabricators across South Africa. Each window is built to measure for its opening.
What Types of Steel Windows Can You Choose From?
Heritage Windows
Heritage steel windows recreate the fine glazing bars of older steel windows and can be finished with Jansen accessories such as antique brass fittings. They suit period homes, and also new builds that borrow a classic look. We cover restoration work in more depth on our heritage steel windows page.
Tilt-and-Turn Windows
One handle gives you two ways to open the window. Turn it one way, and the sash swings inwards on side hinges. Turn it further and the sash tilts in from the top, which lets air in while the window stays secure. The system can be scaled up to door dimensions where you need an exit route. See the steel tilt and turn windows range.
Fixed Windows
Fixed lights do not open, so the profiles stay at their slimmest and the panes can be larger. They are often combined with opening sashes in the same frame, or used as clerestory and feature windows where ventilation comes from elsewhere. For full-height glazed walls, take a look at our steel facades.
Casement Windows
Casements are hinged at the side and open much like a small door. They are the traditional steel window in many South African homes and remain a practical choice when you want the full opening for airflow on a warm afternoon.
Who Chooses Steel Windows?
Most of our window projects come from homeowners building or renovating with an architect. Steel also works well in commercial interiors, where glazed internal screens divide a space without closing it off. For internal screens, our slimline steel doors and partitions use the same slim profile language as the windows.
How Does a Steel Window Project Work?
It starts with a drawing. Send us a sketch or your architect’s plans, and we typically turn around budget pricing within 48 hours, so that one of our accredited metalworkers can provide a quote. During design, we advise on profile choice and opening types, and we can prepare preliminary structural and thermal calculations for larger openings.
Once the design is settled, fabrication drawings are approved and a Jansen accredited fabrication partner builds and installs your windows.
What Should You Consider Before Ordering?
- Thermal performance: Jansen offers thermally broken systems for projects where energy performance matters, such as rooms with large areas of glass.
- Glazing: double glazing adds weight and depth, which affects which profile is suitable.
- Coastal exposure: homes near the sea need the right coating specification. The coating applicator issues the guarantee against corrosion.
- Approvals: in older neighbourhoods, changing your windows may need heritage approval before work begins.
Where Can You See Steel Windows in Cape Town?
Profiles are easier to judge in person than on a screen. Visit our Cape Town showroom to handle the hardware and compare window types side by side, or get in touch with your drawings. If doors are part of the same project, our page on steel doors in Cape Town covers those options.
